Differences of YANGGU DMZ

YANGGJU in KOREAN sounds like [yaŋ gʊ].

In SOUTH KOREA, there are few DMZ tour places; each place has invasion tunnel (dug by NORTH KOREA) and observatory.

The most popular DMZ tour place is at PAJU, which has 3rd TUNNEL and DORA OBSERVATORY. This is easily accessible from SEOUL in 1 hour because the distance is 64KM (or, 40 miles). The problem of this place…too many tourists are visiting this place. Especially, due to many group tourists from neighboring country, this place lost the authentic atmosphere.

That’s why we made YANGGU DMZ TOUR for the alternatives to PAJU DMZ TOUR.

I.e., If you want to visit the real DMZ, you need to choose YANGGU rather than PAJU because this place gives you the real military tension between SOUTH and NORTH KOREA.

The border at YANGGU is at 1,000 meters from sea level. So, observatory where you will visit is at the top of the mountain. You will see the guard post of NORTH KOREA over the mountain. Two country soldiers are supposed to watch each other for 24 hours.

On the way, you will realize that YANGGU is very mountainous place. After passing many army camps, you will reach the registration office on the background of huge mountain. That’s why NORHT KOREA dug the hidden tunnel intending to hit SOUTH KOREA quickly.

The places where you visit

▪ 4TH TUNNEL: The fourth “tunnel of aggression” was discovered on March 3, 1990, in the northern part of HAEAN-MYEON, which borders North Korean territory. It is a deep underground tunnel dug from the northern side within the demilitarized zone, passing under the armistice line. Three similar tunnels were found between 1974 and 1978, all farther west and closer to SEOUL. The tunnel was found at a depth of 145 m and was explored through a borehole and a counter tunnel, since the tunnel was incomplete and did not yet have an entrance on the southern side. The tunnel is estimated to be over a mile long and to extend at least 4000 feet on the southern side of the demarcation line. SOUTH KOREA alleged that the NORTH KOREA military dug the tunnel in preparation for an invasion of the South, violating the terms of the cease-fire agreement of 1953. [from wikipedia]

▪ EULJI OBSERVATORY: It is the highest observatory open to public. Comparing to other observatories, you can look the guard posts of NORTH KOREA very closely (the shortest one distance: 800 meters) because it is located at sharp & tall mountains. To reach this observatory from the ground level, we need to pass through the security check post, here the armed KOREAN soldiers stop you and record the passenger information.
