Nature of DMZ
DMZ is the abbreviation for Demilitarized Zone.
Upon the signing of the cease-fire agreement in 1953, two KOREAS agreed to maintain the peace zone for 4 kilo meters and each built the fence at the distance of 2 kilo meters from the border.
But, NORTH KOREA breached the agreement and they have made many kind of threatening actions.
Among such disturbances, the construction of the hidden tunnel traumatized SOUTH KOREAN people because this intended to attack SEOUL by moving tens of thousands troops in an instant.
After this detection, SOUTH KOREA government decided to open this to public and built the observatory next to the tunnel.
Therefore, this became the most popular DMZ tour place, at which 3rd TUNNEL and DORA OBSERVATORY are located nearby. This is easily accessible from SEOUL in 1 hour because the distance is 64KM (or, 40 miles).
Please note that you will go to CHEORWON DMZ on MONDAY because 3rd TUNNEL and DORA OBSERVATORY are closed on MONDAY. (But, there is no price difference.)
The places where you visit
▪ 3RD TUNNEL: The third “tunnel of aggression” was discovered in October 1978. Previously, in 1974, KIM BOO-SEONG, the defector from NORTH KOREA reported that he was participating in the tunneling project before he came to SOUTH KOREA. It is a deep underground tunnel dug from the northern side within the demilitarized zone, passing under the armistice line. The tunnel was found at a depth of 145 m and was explored through a borehole and a counter tunnel, since the tunnel was incomplete and did not yet have an entrance on the southern side. The tunnel is estimated to be over a mile long and to extend at least 400 meters on the southern side of the demarcation line. SOUTH KOREA alleged that the NORTH KOREA military dug the tunnel in preparation for an invasion of the SOUTH, violating the terms of the cease-fire agreement of 1953.
▪ DORA OBSERVATORY: It is situated at DORASAN MOUNTAIN, which is at the far north fence of SOUTH KOREA. At this observatory, you can see GAESEONG INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX and GAESEONG CITY across Demilitarized Zone.
▪ DORASAN STATION: One of former president of SOUTH KOREA, KIM DAE-JUNG agreed with KIM JEONG-IL to connect the rail road between two KOREAS in 2002. So, SOUTH KOREA extended the rail road here by 4 kilo meters. But, unfortunately, NORTH KOREA didn’t follow up the connecting and this new rail road station is being used for tourist attraction rather than actual train station.
